    Film tip: "Million Dollar Arm"

Sure, this isn't the greatest movie ever made, but it's pleasantly diverting. It's fairly wholesome, too - which might not be surprising, considering its Disney imprimatur. Jon Hamm plays a sports agent who travels to India to find The Next Great Pitcher. He's hoping to transform a cricket bowler into a baseball player. Things, of course, don't go as planned. The based-on-a-true-story tale is as much about the agent's growing from a shallow, self-absorbed guy to a responsible, sincere adult. It's not exactly breaking new ground, but writer Thomas McCarthy - whose credits include the sterling "Win Win" and "The Visitor" - brings his own idiosyncratic sense to the traditional tale, and director Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl") keeps things real and understated. Every scene Gillespie shoots in India fairly vibrates with the energy - and withering heat - of that country. As for the actors, I like my Hamm goofily comic, and he doesn't get to cut loose here, but he does provide a strong, manly center for the proceedings. He and Lake Bell, effortlessly conveying smart and confident, share a playful chemistry. Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal are likeable as the Indian recruits. I wish there were more face time for Aasif Mandvi as Hamm's business partner. The screen sparkles a little more every time he's there.
