Chorus of Westerly presents Summer Pops

It's become a tradition: The Chorus of Westerly's Summer Pops concert in Wilcox Park has developed hoards of fans over its 34 years. Those devotees will descend on the Westerly site this Saturday for another festive musical celebration.

Who's who: Music Director Andrew Howell will lead the chorus, accompanied by the Pops Festival Orchestra and bass vocalist Dashon Burton. Burton will sing three movements of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Five Mystical Songs and five of Aaron Copland's "Old American Songs."

Big finish: As always, the show will culminate in a slam-bang performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Punctuating the vocal pyrotechnics will be Grucci fireworks, Newport Artillery cannons, and Christ Church bells.

Weather or not: If it rains, the chorus will post its new date around the park, on its website, and on WBLQ (1230 AM) and WCRI (95.9 FM) radio stations. Sunday and Monday are set aside as rain dates.

On to Europe: This is the chorus members' last show before they head out for their central European tour in July, with stops in Prague, Vienna and Budapest.
