Courier model on view starting Saturday
The U.S. Coast Guard Museum at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is opening a new exhibit that will display a model of the Cold War-era Coast Guard cutter Courier, which served as a radio-relay station for the federal government's "Voice of America" broadcast program. The exhibit will open to the public starting Saturday at 10 a.m. and will remain open for a year.
The Courier was based in Rhodes, Greece, from 1952 to 1964 and broadcast U.S. government-funded news in Soviet-controlled countries. The exhibit recognizes the 50th anniversary of the Courier finishing its mission and will feature blueprints of the cutter along with related photographs and artifacts.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. During the summer months the museum is only open on the first and third Saturday of each month.
