New London police arrest Groton man after child found in car with temperature above 130 degrees inside

    Brian Pavao

New London — Police arrested a Groton man Tuesday for allegedly leaving a 6-month-old child in a parked vehicle for an estimated 30 minutes or more with just one window open less than an inch.

Brian Pavao, 33, of 44 Round Hill Road in Groton was charged with risk of injury to a minor.

Police said Pavao left the child in an unlocked car at ShopRite supermarket at 351 N. Frontage Road. Police said the interior temperature of the vehicle exceeded 130 degrees when they arrived. The child was breathing and alert, police said, but was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment.

At 2:36 p.m., an anonymous person called 911 to report seeing the child. After police arrived on scene, emergency dispatch contacted ShopRite to have the vehicle owner paged and told to return to the parking lot.

Pavao was held in lieu of a $75,000 bond. Police also notified the state Department of Children and Families.
