New London police place handcuffs on the driver of an overturned vehicle Sunday after performing a field sobriety test along Water Street.

New London — A Dayville driver was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs early tonight after he lost control of his car and flipped it on its roof on Water Street just north of Governor Winthrop Boulevard.

Vincent Pontarelli, 29, was also charged with following too closely. He was expected to be released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court July 18.

A female passenger was not injured and Pontarelli was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with minor injuries after the 7 p.m. crash. Water Street remained open as police routed traffic around the crash.
