NEW HAVEN CELEBRATES AMISTAD ANNIVERSARY
New Haven - The operators of the replica slave-ship Amistad plan a tour of Northeast ports this summer to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the famous rebellion aboard the original ship.
The replica, Freedom Schooner Amistad, will be in New Haven until July 11, then travel to New London, Bridgeport, Boston and Manhattan.
The group that runs the ship, Amistad America, has had serious financial problems and recently lost its federal tax-exempt status. Amistad America Executive Director Hanifa Washington tells the New Haven Register they hope to have that restored this summer after the state completes an audit of the organization's finances.
