New London police charge Waterford man when two children are left in hot car

    John Morgan

New London — Police arrested a Waterford man late Tuesday afternoon for allegedly leaving two children, ages 6 and 9, in his car while he visited his office on State Street.

John Morgan, 60, of 7 W. Strand Road has been charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

An officer spotted Morgan’s car parked and unlocked with the windows rolled up on the 200 block of State Street around 5 p.m., with the two children inside, unattended, according to a press release.

“The children were dripping with sweat and faces were reddened from the heat in the vehicle,” the release states.

The temperature inside the car was 100 degrees with 58 percent humidity and the outside temperature was 83 degrees, according to the release.

Morgan reportedly told police he had stepped into his office for only a few minutes, but police were on scene for 10 minutes before Morgan returned to his car, according to the release.

Morgan is due at New London Superior Court today. Police said at 8 p.m. Tuesday that Morgan was still being held at the New London police station in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
