Walking tour Saturday includes Uncas Leap

Norwich – The Norwich Historical Society will continue its second Saturday walking tours with a tour of the historic Uncas Leap area and discussion of the legends associated with 17th century Mohegan Indians at the site.

The free The 1.5-hour, 1.5-mile tour will begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot just below the Yantic Falls gorge on Yantic Street.

Long before English settlers purchased the 9-Mile Square of land upon which the Norwich sits, the land was owned and occupied by the Mohegan Tribe. Stephanie Fielding, a Mohegan tribal elder, will recount tales of Chief Uncas and the legend of his leap over the falls.

The walking tour will progress from the planned Uncas Leap Heritage Area to the Royal Mohegan Burial Ground near Chelsea Parade on Sachem Street.

This is the fourth of six Second Saturday walking tours sponsored by the Norwich Historical Society.

"Walking tours in and around Norwich are becoming more popular," said Dianne Brown, secretary of the Norwich Historical Society. "I am so proud of our city, and it excites me to see so many people interested in learning more about it."
