The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association is offering a series of evening kayaking excursions on the Wood and Queen’s rivers timed to take advantage of the season’s super full moons.

Introduction to kayaking courses also are available.

The first evening paddle will be 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the association’s offices at 203 Arcadia Road in Hope Valley. It will be an easy paddle suitable for all levels. The fee is $10 for association members and $20 for non-members. Participants may bring their own boats or use one of the association’s 9-foot single person kayaks for an extra $10 for members or $20 for non-members. Boats may be reserved during registration.

The introduction to kayak paddling class will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2 at the association offices. This six-hour, ACA-certified course is for beginning kayakers will focus on safety on the water, improving paddling skills, and practicing rescue techniques. Children 10 and older accompanied by an adult are welcome. Space is very limited. The fee is $40 for members or $50 for non-members and includes kayaks and equipment.

Two “almost full moon” paddles are also scheduled.The first will launch from the historic Kenyon Grist Mill, 21 Glen Rock Road, Usquepaugh, R.I., from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9. After an evening cruise up and back on the Queen’s River, participants will be treated to Kenyon Mill’s famous Johnnycakes. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 7 there will be a late summer paddle on the Wood River, launched from association office. The fee for both events is $10 for members and $20 for non-members, or an extra $10 for use of a boat for members and $20 for nonmembers.
