    Kvitova headlines New Haven Open tennis field

    Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, fresh off winning her second Wimbledon women's singles championship, headlines a strong field for the 2014 Connecticut Open, tournament director Anne Worcester announced Tuesday.

    The tournament will be held Aug. 15-23 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

    The field also includes Wimbledon runnerup Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, defending champion and French Open finalist Simona Halep of Romania, and four-time Connecticut Open champion Caroline Wozniacki of Belgium. Halep is currently ranked No. 3 in the world rankings, Kvitova - who won the 2012 New Haven title but lost to Halep in the 2013 final - is No. 4 and Bouchard is No. 7.

    Three other top 20 players are also in the field - No. 13 Flavia Pennetta of Italy, No. 14 Sarah Errani of Italy, No. 16 Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain and No. 19 Ekaterina Makorova of Russia.

    The field will be completed in the coming weeks with the addition of four wildcard picks and the addition of six players who will advance through the 48 player qualifying draw. The first two seeds receive byes.
