During his waking hours, Trevor Hutchinson spends the majority of his time at the golf course.

"I golf every day," Hutchinson said. "Other than that, I work. I don't do anything else. … You've got to stay devoted."

Devoted.

Dedicated.

Addicted.

Take your pick.

Hutchinson has an incurable golf bug. He also works at Pequot Golf Club in Stonington.

Since picking up his first set of clubs at about six years old, Hutchinson has developed a love affair with the sport. He took his first lesson at eight.

Hutchinson graduated from Grasso Tech as one of the top golfers in the program's history. He was named The Day's 2014 All-Area Golfer of the Year.

"Trevor was very eager to learn the game of golf and to be good at it," Grasso Tech coach Thomas Allen said. "He was very self-motivated. … He seems to have a passion for the game."

According to Allen, Hutchinson tapped into two sources of motivation during his high school career.

He learned from former Grasso Tech teammate Steve Robarge, who set a good example as far as work ethic and leadership.

Allen considers Robarge and Hutchinson the two best golfers to play at Grasso in the last 15 years.

"Steve was a year ahead of Trevor and did very well with his game," Allen said. "That helped motivated Trevor because he saw the recognition Steven was getting and his accomplishments."

Hutchinson's other positive role model is his grandfather, Michael Dunphy, 70, who's also an avid golfer. They've played countless rounds together at Pequot.

"It's great," Hutchinson said. "He's definitely been there with golf, moral support, whatever. … If you look at him on the golf course, he's still a young 50-year-old man."

Pequot is Hutchinson's second home. For the second straight summer, he's working there. His duties mostly include "grunt work," but that's fine with him because he gets to spend his days at the golf course.

"I love it," Hutchinson said.

A four-year player, he capped his career with a fine senior season. Playing at No. 1, he posted a 13-2-1 record. Two of his wins came against Parish Hill standout Nick Harrington, who earned co-medalist honors at the CIAC Division IV Championship at Timberlin Golf Club.

Consistency was Hutchinson's trademark. He finished with a 4.37 differential. His best round came at Goodwin Park Golf Course in Hartford where he shot one-under.

"He played very consistently," Allen said. "That has to do with the fact that past couple of years he's really committed himself to it over the summer on his own."

Hutchinson enjoyed playing in 18-hole tournaments. He placed third with an 83 at the Fishers Island tournament.

In the Constitution State Conference tournament, he finished third, shooting a 77. It was a strong showing considering Harrington and Putnam's Spencer Salvas, two all-staters, were in the field.

"Those three kids were some of the strongest golfers I've seen in our league in 20 years," Allen said. "They're players. No question coming in third in that field was definitely an accomplishment."

A two-time all-conference selection, Hutchinson qualified for the state tournament as an individual for the first time and finished 32nd out of a field of 101 golfers. One bad hole inflated his round.

In the fall, Hutchinson is heading to Central Connecticut State University where he hopes to continue his golf career.

His major will be business, which he considers a back-up plan if his golf career plans fall through.

"If golf doesn't work out, it's something to fall back on," Hutchinson said. "I want a golf career. I want to play professional golf."
