Baber steps down as Ledyard girls' basketball coach

Adam Baber, who guided the Ledyard High School girls' basketball program to back-to-back division titles in the Eastern Connecticut Conference, has resigned to accept a teaching position at Fishers Island School.

Baber, 31, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Eastern Connecticut State University in May, and this will be his first full-time teaching job. Fishers Island has approximately 70 students in Pre-K through 12th grade and Baber said he will be teaching health and phys ed.

"This was a great opportunity," Baber said Tuesday night. "This is one of those rare opportunities you don't pass up."

Baber had four successful seasons at Ledyard, especially the past two years when the Colonels went 42-9, won the ECC Medium Division title in 2013, shared the Large Division title with Norwich Free Academy in 2014 and went 22-4, reaching the Class L state semifinals before losing to eventual champion Hartford Capital, the consensus No. 1 team in Connecticut.

"All four years (at Ledyard) were just remarkable," he said. "The coaching staff was great, the student-athletes were tremendous and so were the parents. It was a tremendous experience and I'm really going to miss it."
