    Disc tip: "Platinum"

    Miranda Lambert

Natalie Maines, if you don't want to come back to country music, that's just fine: there are other Miss Firecrackers out there. We have Miranda Lambert, dammit! Lambert fires up every track on her latest release with an irresistible sass and twang. She's got attitude to spare, all expressed in a malleable voice. And "Platinum" offers her finest collection of songs to date. While there are still butt-kickin' tunes - Lambert gets all Thelma and Louise with Carrie Underwood on "Somethin' Bad" - the singer, who recently hit 30, gets reflective. She gets wistful about the past on "Smokin' and Drinkin" and downright comic about aging on "Gravity is a Bitch" (sample rhyme: "Got bags under your eyes/Bigger hips and bigger thighs"). "Priscilla" bumps with an insistent beat, and "Girls" warns guys against making assumptions about women. This is the cool-chick album of the summer.
