New London brawl and shooting linked

New London - Lydia Medina lay in bed at her Colman Street home Tuesday recovering from injuries she received during a large brawl the night before that involved her 17-year-old daughter and a group of young people.

Medina, 49, wore a cast up to her knee, a splint on her wrist and had a bruise on her forehead.

As New London police continued to investigate the brawl, which they said involved two groups of girls, and a shooting that occurred in the same neighborhood a short time later, Medina said she fears the violence could continue. As evening fell, she was relieved to hear that a police cruiser was parked a few doors down.

"This is the time of day they come out," she said.

Medina said she has called police several times over the past few days as large groups of teens arrived at her house to confront her daughter, Jeniffer Rivera-Medina. Police told her that nobody could be arrested because no crimes had been committed, she said.

When officers were called back to 114 Colman St. at about 8:15 p.m. Monday, Medina said she was lying on the ground, screaming in agony because she had been attacked with a baseball bat by a young male who has been harassing her daughter. Medina was hospitalized and five people, including her daughter and son, 32-year-old Jose Medina, were arrested. The son lives at 40 Pearl St., but he had stopped by the family home for dinner when a large group approached the home, according to Medina.

"My son went out and said, 'Move if you're going to disrespect this home,' '' Lydia Medina said. Both Medina and her son got involved when groups of girls began attacking the daughter and a friend, she said.

Jeniffer Rivera-Medina and another 17-year-old girl were charged with breach of peace. Sandy Moreno, 18, of 189 Parkway North, and Jose Medina were charged with breach of peace and possession of a dangerous weapon. Amani Clinton, 19, of 270 Crystal Ave., Apt. H2, was charged with breach of peace and inciting a riot.

Officers went back to the neighborhood at 11:45 p.m. for a report of shots fired across the street, around 103 Colman St. Nobody was injured, but police said they discovered some property damage. They are investigating the two incidents simultaneously, since they believe they are related.

Medina said her daughter, a high school student with a 1-year-old baby, has been targeted because she does not want to be with a teenage boy who lives in the neighborhood and is friendly with a rival group of people.

The daughter, who missed school because she had spent the previous night in jail and had to appear in court Tuesday, said she has been threatened on Facebook and in repeated phone calls to her house.

"Usually I stay quiet, but it won't stop," Jeniffer Rivera-Media said. "I just want this to stop. It's every night and every day."
