Hot and tired firefighters brace a large diameter hose as they battle a large house fire at 15 Collins Road in Stonington Thursday, July 17, 2014.

Stonington — A fire that required firefighters to connect hoses to a hydrant a quarter-mile away badly damaged a home Thursday afternoon at 15 Collins Road.

When firefighters arrived on the scene of the 2:50 p.m. fire, heavy smoke was billowing from the roof of the brick home. Soon after, flames began shooting 15 feet into the air from the roof.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control, but not before it caused extensive damage to the rear and south end of the nine-room, 3,681-square-foot home.

Police said EMTs at the scene treated several firefighters for minor injuries, one for a hand injury and the others for heat-related problems.

Police said the homeowner, who had purchased the house in June, had left earlier in the afternoon and returned to find smoke coming from the house.

No one was in the house at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from Stonington borough, Wequetequock, Old Mystic, Quiambaug, Pawcatuck and the Naval Submarine Base responded to the scene, as well as Stonington and Mystic River Ambulance.

Fire Marshal George Brennan and police Detective Sgt. David Knowles began their investigation into the cause of the fire on Thursday afternoon.
