Waterford - Waterford completed a perfect run through pool play by rallying for a 7-3 victory over Simsbury in the Connecticut Babe Ruth 15-year-old state tournament Monday night.

The District 6 champion and tournament host finished 3-0 in the five-team National Division pool, clinching the top seed and earning a spot in Friday's semifinals against the American Division runnerup.

Waterford trailed 3-0 late before scoring two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to pull out the win. Down 3-2 in the seventh, Chase Speller's two run double gave Waterford the lead and Steven Gerovitz later cleared the bases with another double. Cory Conderino and Daniel Castelpoggi also doubled and Alex Petchark had had two hits.

Reliever Tyler Howser, who stranded runners at second and third with no outs in the fifth, earned the win. He did not allow a hit in three innings of work.

In Monday's other game:

• Kevin Fuller pitched a one-hitter as Stamford defeated East Lyme 10-0 in an American Division pool game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule. Kyle Ayers had the lone hit, a single, for East Lyme (0-2), which was eliminated from advancing to the semifinals, while Peter Tauro was the losing pitcher. Stamford is 2-0.

New York-Penn League

• Michael Gerber had two hits, including a two-run home run, with three RBI and three runs as the Connecticut Tigers sacked the Batavia Muckdogs, 12-3, to complete a three-game sweep before 921 at Dwyer Stadium. Joseph Pankake had three hits, including two doubles, with four RBI and a run for Connecticut (19-18), which has a winning record for the first time this season. Ross Kivett also went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.

NECBL

• Mystic Schooners righthander Michael Concato was named New England Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week. Concato, a sophomore from Dartmouth, pitched eight scoreless innings during a victory over New Bedford on July 17, allowing just three singles, no walks and striking out nine. He is 1-0 for the Schooners with a 1.90 ERA, 30 strikeouts and just six walks.

Sutera (9-10) tournament

• Nate McCormack had two hits, including a double, as Mystic defeated New London 7-5. Matt Robinson got the win and also hit a double for Mystic while Edgar Mateo had two hits for New London and Guiseppie Satti struck out seven in a losing effort.

• Andrew Benoit and Cameron Dececco combined to pitch Montville to a 4-1 win over East Lyme. Benoit and Trevor Meaike had two hits each for Montville while Matt Bradley had two hits and Rowen Mundell had a double for East Lyme.

• Jackson Lalima had double and Nate McCormack pitched three innings for the win as Mystic topped Groton 12-2.

Sutera (11-12) tournament

• Groton defeated Lyme-Old Lyme 14-7 as Phil Warner hit two home runs and Sam Heilig added another. Tyler Miller got the win and also had two hits while Colby Andrews had four hits for Lyme-Old Lyme.

• Giovanni Valentine was the winning pitcher as Mystic beat New London 11-7. Valentine had two hits as did Sam Davis and Pacey Steele, including a home run, for Mystic. Gerlaun Tyus hit a home run for New London.

• Zac Southard struck seven as Montville shut out Waterford 10-0. Ryan Champagne with two hits, including a home run, for Montville while Nick Gallivan had two doubles and Kenny Hean two singles.

ECML

• Tyler Mikula and Dan Bradley combined to pitch a two-hitter as the Panera Pirates defeated Griswold 6-0. Mikula allowed only one hit while striking out five over five innings. Ken Olszewski, Beriah Smith and Sawyer Gregory each had a pair of hits for the Pirates.

College hockey

• UConn, which makes its debut in Hockey East this season, will take part in the second annual Liberty Hockey Invitational on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The Huskies will play Merrimack, also a member of Hockey East, in the first game on Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m., followed by the 250th meeting between Yale and Princeton at 7:30. The third-place game (1 p.m.) and final (4 p.m.) will be played on Nov. 2.
