On Oct. 15, 1981, my husband Jack Sauer was in a plane crash while on assignment as a photographer for The Day.

As the anniversary of that day approaches each year we think back on what a difficult time it was for Jack, our family, friends and his co-workers.

I had been wondering what he would do this year, the 30th anniversary of that life-altering day. When I saw that Wayfarer Bicycle Shop was sponsoring the Tom Danielson Fundraiser Ride, I suggested to Jack that it might be a great way to celebrate his anniversary.

He rode to East Lyme High school and did the 50-mile ride. He enjoyed riding with and actually talking to Tom Danielson during the event. When Jack came home he told me that he was gasping for air just like he was 30 years ago! The event was a great success due to the planning and hard work of everyone involved.
