New London to honor memory of James Johnson on Saturday
The basketball courts at Toby May Park in New London will be dedicated to the memory of the late James Johnson, former girls' basketball coach at New London High School, during a basketball tournament on Saturday.
The Abounding Grace Ministries tournament, which features teams in youth (ages 9-12), junior (13-16) and senior (17-25) divisions, is set to begin at 10 a.m., but will take a break at approximately 12:30 p.m. for a ceremony to dedicate the naming of the James Johnson Basketball Courts at Toby May Park.
A short speaking program will take place and feature New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, City Council member Marty Olsen, Mike McLaughlin and R.J. Evans, the former Norwich Free Academy great who went on to play at Holy Cross and UConn.
