Groton City Weekend: Music, food and fun

We love to fete our towns around here. We have Celebrate East Lyme. We have Waterford Week. And, this weekend, we have Groton City Weekend.

The Groton festival begins tonight, when the Coast Guard Band plays in Washington Park. Then, on Friday, city residents and their guests gather at the same park for all sorts of entertainment, from kids' activities to bungee jumping and rock-wall climbing. Trucks and equipment from the city's highway, fire, police departments and more will be on view. The City's 50th Anniversary Photo will be snapped at 7 p.m., with the Annual Community Service and City Pride awards handed out at 7:30.

On Saturday, Groton City restaurants offer specials - in items or pricing, or in taking a percentage off visitors' bills. Among the venues taking part are Ortega's Mexican Restaurant, Benneditto's Grinders, Friendly Thai, the Jerk Center, and Norm's Diner.

And on Sunday afternoon, things get rocking when The Outriggers play outdoors at the Boogie in the Backyard concert at the Groton Elks Club.
