The big show: The Mystic Outdoor Art Festival happens Saturday and Sunday along the sidewalks of downtown Mystic.

A numbers game: This 57th festival highlights more than 100,000 pieces from upwards of 250 artists. Of course, an event on this scale needs a lot of workers behind the scenes, and more than 100 volunteers help out.

Young at art: In addition, the creations of local students get time in the spotlight in the Young Artist Exhibition. Sea-life art is the focus of this display on West Main Street.

Play time: For youngsters inspired to whip up their own art or to indulge in some fun and games, there's the Children's Art Park at the Mystic River Park. They can make fish prints or create funny photo boards. They can have their faces painted or take part in a bean bag toss - or they can choose from various activities headed up by local museums and cultural centers.
