Connecticut residents are being advised to “hang up immediately” if they receive a phone call from anyone claiming to represent Blue Cross & Blue Shield seeking personal health and identification information.

Donna Tommelleo, spokeswoman for the state Insurance Department, said today that there have been no reports from Connecticut thus far about a scam occurring in Rhode Island involving callers claiming to be from Blue Cross & Blue Shield seeking personal information including insurance card numbers, Social Security numbers and date of birth.

Anyone who does receive such a call, she said, should contact her office at (860) 297-3800 or the office of Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen at (860) 808-5318.

In Rhode Island, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin has issued a consumer alert to all Blue Cross Blue Shield Rhode Island members and all state residents that these phone calls are a scam, also known as “phishing.” The calls are reportedly coming from a warehouse in New York City and are not associated with the insurer.

It is believed that those responsible for the scam are looking to obtain information that could be used for health insurance fraud or identity theft.
