Austin Mahone in concert at Foxwoods

Austin Mahone performs in May on NBC's "Today" show in New York.

Did you know it's possible to post an online video of yourself covering a Justin Bieber song - and then score a major label recording contract? Well, it at least happened to someone named Austin Mahone, an 18-year-old new superstar from San Antonio, Texas, who subsequently has released two big-hit albums.

(Yes, and you can be forgiven, in this spirit, if you believe that the metaphorical brainstem of the world has officially rotted like a felt shroud on a buried corpse.)

Here's something about young mister Austin Mahone, though: His boy-pop/electro-dance songs are ridiculously catchy. "Mmm, Yeah," a single featuring Pit Bull, is almost maddening in its groove.

In addition to the thousands of 12- to 17-year-olds going nuts to the tune, one can imagine such varied folks as Michele Bachmann, Pope Francis, Lemmy and Don Zimmer rocking right along - and Zimmer's dead!

Mahone will likely be forgotten in three years. But live for the infectious moment and see Mahone perform Friday in Foxwoods' Grand Theater. The Vamps, Fifth Harmony and Shawn Mendes appear in support.

    - RICK KOSTER

Austin Mahone, 7 p.m. Friday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods Resort Casino; $29.50-$55; 1-800-200-2882.
