Behind the scenes of ‘The Hero’

Model-maker Alan Burghardt will lead a discussion on The Hero, a 47-foot Mystic-built sloop, on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Capt. Palmer House, 40 Palmer St., Stonington.

The Hero also was part of the 1812-14 fleet of privateers out of Mystic and Stonington. In 1820, Nathaniel Brown Palmer and a crew of four sailed The Hero to the south Atlantic to find fur seals, and accidently came across a continent not yet on the map: Antarctica. The area they found is today known as Palmer Land or Palmer Peninsula.

Burghardt's model of The Hero is the centerpiece of an exhibit at the Palmer House about the career of Palmer.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information, visit the www.stoningtonhistory.org.
