Simsbury - Phil Perry of Black Hall Club in Old Lyme is in a tie for fourth place after the first round of play Tuesday at the 27th Annual Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship being played at Hop Meadow Country Club.

David Olender of Ellington Ridge Country Club fired a 4-under-par round of 68 to lead by two shots over Chris Maxwell of Tunxis Plantation and Kevin Foster of Hop Meadow heading into the final day of the 54-hole event. The second round begins at 7:30 this morning, with competitors playing 18-holes in the morning followed by the final round in the afternoon.

Perry shot a 1-under 71 and among the group of challengers for the lead has perhaps the most experience in the tournament, finishing second in last year's championship and third in the 2012 Mid-Amateur, which was also held at Hop Meadow.

Ron Soccoli Jr., also of Black Hall, is tied for 12th after shooting a 73, as is Dave Jones of Mohegan Sun at Pautipaug, while William Machnicki of Mohegan Sun is tied for 28th after a 76. The starting field of 82 players was trimmed to the low 36 plus ties following the first round.

Babe Ruth (15) World Series

• Chase Speller will represent New England champion Waterford in the Babe Ruth Baseball 15-year-old World Series Home Run Derby competition today at 6:30 p.m. at David Story Field in Longview, Washington. The event will be held on the eve of the tournament, which begins on Thursday when Waterford plays Broomall/Newtown (Pa.) at 3:05 p.m., the first of Waterford's four pool play games in the National Division.

Battle of Stonington 5K

• William Sanders of Wethersfield won the Battle of Stonington 5K road race in 15 minutes, 32 seconds, topping Scott Mindel of New London (15:49) and Anthony Gonsalves of Pawtucket, R.I. (16:22). Nicholas Migani of Jewett City (16:23) and John Bigouette of Pawcatuck (17:00) rounded out the top five. Kaela O'Neil of North Kingstown, R.I., was the top women's finisher in 18:06, followed by Tenley Godfey of Pawcatuck (19:17) and Ellen Arvidson of New London (20:25).
