A driver traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 95 North on the Gold Star Bridge was killed Saturday when he struck a car traveling in the left center lane north of Exit 84.

The head-on collision was reported at 4:17 a.m.

Twenty-six-year-old Francisco Lobos, of Norwich, was ejected from his vehicle and died from his injuries, according to an accident report from state police in the Montville barracks. The driver of the vehicle Lobos hit, Derrick Brawn, 25, of Howland, Maine, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Both Brawn's 2011 GMC Sierra and Lobos' 2002 Saturn SL sustained heavy damage, according to the report.

Saturday's accident was the latest in a series of fatal collisions in recent years caused by wrong-way drivers. In December, three women were killed by a drunken wrong-way driver on I-95 near Exit 70. In November, a man driving north on I-95 South near Exit 81 who police said was having a diabetic emergency died after crashing into the guardrails.

In June, a woman was killed after driving the wrong way on I-95 near Exit 75 and crashing into a tractor-trailer.

In 2010, a man drove the wrong way for 3 miles on I-95 before crashing into another car near Exit 90, killing both himself and the other driver.

A year before that, a Connecticut College student was killed in a collision caused by an intoxicated man headed in the wrong direction on Interstate 395 near Exit 79A.
