Mystic vessel pumpout service now offered at Fishers Island

Coastal Environmental Services of Mystic is now offering vessel pumpout service to Fishers Island, N.Y., the first time the Mystic-based operation has expanded outside of Connecticut.

This extends CES’ coverage of Long Island Sound, which already includes the Mystic and the Thames rivers, the area from Clinton Harbor to Madison, and from Guilford to East Haven. The expansion to New York waters furthers the organization’s commitment to provide leadership in protecting and preserving coastal waters, according to its press release.

CES began operating in 2007 and is funded by the Clean Vessel Act grant program through the state Department of Energy and Environment Protection. This year, CES has carried out 50 percent more pumpouts from May to August than it did during these months in 2013, going from a total of 2,036 to 3,084 pumpouts completed and servicing 1,018 unique customers, up from 615.

To date this year, CES has kept more than 93,000 gallons of waste, or the equivalent of 17 large tanker trucks, out of Long Island Sound.
