Storrs - UConn football coach Bob Diaco introduced his four captains during the Huskies' annual media day on Thursday at the Burton Family Football Complex.

Senior wide receiver Geremy Davis, senior cornerback Byron Jones, senior center Alex Mateas and junior linebacker Marquise Vann were selected to lead the Huskies during a team vote on Wednesday night.

UConn opens its 2014 season - and the Diaco era - on Friday, Aug. 29 against Brigham Young at Rentschler Field (7 p.m., ESPN).

The 6-foot-3 Davis became the first player in the FBS era to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season when he made 71 receptions for 1,085 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. He also set a UConn single-game record with 15 catches (for 207 yards) against Memphis on Dec. 6.

Jones, a three-year starter, has six career interceptions and 199 career tackles while Mateas started all 12 games for the Huskies a year ago and Vann started three games a year ago and returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in a game at Cincinnati on Oct. 19.

CT Open Family Classic

• Thomas and Nicholas Steiglehner of Groton won the father/child 12-and-under division of the Connecticut Open Family Classic at the Connecticut Tennis Center.

The nine winning teams were scheduled to be honored with a trophy presentation on Stadium Court during Thursday's evening session. More than 1,500 participants competed in more than 75 local events at tennis facilities throughout five states in order to reach the finals.

The Steiglehners, representing Groton Long Point Yacht Club, defeated Tom and Amanda Conrod of Trumbull Racquet Club 6-3, 6-1.

McLain at the Dodd

• Former Detroit Tigers Cy Young Award winner Denny McLain will appear at Dodd Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 27, rescheduled from earlier in the season. McLain will be on hand to meet and greet fans, sign autographs and throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game as the Connecticut Tigers take on the Lowell Spinners at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. McLain was 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA in leading Detroit to the World Series title in 1968.
