Waterford wins first game in Babe Ruth (15) World Series

Longview, Wash. —Waterford bounced back from a potentially demoralizing loss on Saturday night to win its first game in the Babe Ruth Baseball 15-year-old World Series on Sunday, a 4-3 victory over previously unbeaten Lumber River (N.C.).

A loss would have eliminated Waterford (1-2) from advancing to the single-elimination phase of the tournament, although the New England champions still must beat Puget Sound (Wash.) in their final National Division pool play game on Monday to have any chance of extending their season.

Waterford, which couldn’t hold leads of 5-0, 9-4 and 10-7 during a 13-10, 10-inning loss to Kelso (Wash.) late Saturday night, scored four runs in the first inning against Lumber River (2-1) and then rode the combined pitching of Tyler Howser (4 2/3 innings) and Corey Conderino (2 1/3) to the victory.

Chase Speller had two hits for Waterford while Tyler Yeomans, Ben Pickowitz and Alex Petchark each drove in a run during the outburst in the first.
