    Local roundup: Tigers rout Hudson Valley 8-2

    Norwich - Ben Verlander had two hits, including a two-run double in a four-run fourth inning, as the Connecticut Tigers rolled to an 8-2 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Sunday at Dodd Stadium.

    Brett Pirtle and Tim Remes each added two hits and an RBI for the Tigers (36-32) while Spencer Turnbull, one of four Connecticut pitchers, pitched three shutout innings while allowing just one hit and retiring the final eight batters he faced.

    Connecticut and the Lowell Spinners, the Single-A short season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, begin a three-game series tonight at Dodd Stadium. Austin Pritcher (6-2, 4.02 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Tigers.

    Women's soccer

    • UConn rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Navy 2-1 at Morrone Stadium. Rachel Hill tied it for the Huskies (2-0) in the 31st minute and Samantha McGuire scord the game-winner with just 13 minutes remaining. Liana Hinds and Julie Hubbard had assists for UConn and goalie Emily Armstrong made four saves.

    • Chanel Johnson, a senior from New London, scored the game-winning goal for the second straight game to lift Hartford to a 1-0 victory over NJIT. It was the 11th career goal for Johnson and helped the Hawks start the season 2-0 for the first time since 1999.
