Just Joshing: Josh Groban at Mohegan Sun

It's a tale of two Grobans.

Josh Groban sings with a voice that rings with old-school drama and deep resonance. And his songs, like his signature "You Raise Me Up," might make your mother happy. And maybe your grandmother, too.

But, on the other hand, Groban wields a wicked sense of humor. Just see him on any talk show. Or watch his entertaining turn as the pompous jerk who takes Emma Stone's character for granted in "Crazy, Stupid, Love." (Her reward for putting up with the jerk: Ryan Gosling.) Groban was even game to cameo as a Siberian prisoner in "Muppets Most Wanted," for heaven's sake.

Groban - who just wrapped a stint hosting the ABC singing competition "Rising Star" - is now in the midst of a mini-tour, with two weeks of dates that include a Friday concert at Mohegan Sun Arena. He's bound to dip into songs on his most recent release, 2013's "All That Echoes," which debuted at the top of Billboard's Top 200 chart. He's also expected to be accompanied by the Donn Trenner Orchestra, which is based on New Haven; Groban has had local orchestras at his concert on this summer tour.

And who knows? He might preview some material of his next album, which focuses on songs associated with musical theater.
