Coast Guard Band in concert at Fort Trumbull

The Coast Guard Band is shown playing at a past Fort Trumbull concert.

Here's a musically festive way to celebrate Labor Day weekend: go to hear the esteemed U.S. Coast Guard Band play outside at the scenic Fort Trumbull State Park in New London. Visitors can simultaneously enjoy a jaunty concert and an expansive view of the Thames River.

The Sunday matinee kicks off with a fanfare recently composed by Musician 1st Class Robert Langslet, who is the band's pianist and arranger. The show segues into Weber's "Clarinet Concerto No. 2" featuring clarinet soloist Musician 1st Class Noel Marcano. On the program, too, are a Cole Porter medley and a performance by the Dixieland Band.

And the whole shebang ends in a grand way: with the band playing Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," complete with live cannon fire thanks to The Artillery Company of Newport, Rhode Island.
