    48 USS Springfield 'Class 14400' sailors graduate from submarine school

    Groton - Forty-eight sailors of “Class 14400” USS Springfield, (SSN-761), graduated from Basic Enlisted Submarine School Friday.

    Seaman Apprentice Shane Lee was class honorman with a Grade Point Average of 97.6 and was meritoriously advanced because of academic performance.

    Seaman Samuel Defienbach received the Navy Core Values Award for best exemplifying the standards and expectations of a United States Navy sailor.

    Seaman Robert Davis was recipient of the Submarine Heritage Award.

    Seamen Jacob Foster, Jason Glenn, Derek Ham and Carlos Lujan were graduates with distinction.

    Basic Enlisted Submarine School is a six-week introduction to the basic theory, construction and operation of nuclear powered submarines. In preparation for an assignment, sailors receive instruction on shipboard organization, submarine safety and escape procedures
