    Local roundup: Mitchell men win 1-0 in soccer

    New London - Frank Williams scored 22 seconds into the second half to give the Mitchell College men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday.

    Pawcatuck's Nicholas Donahue had the assist for the Mariners (2-1) and Ramazan Sinani added a save.

    In other games:

    • Senior captain John Tarzian scored in the 81st minute, leading Coast Guard Academy to a 1-0 win over Mass. Maritime. Jonathan Ray assisted on the goal and Richie Burns made two saves for Coast Guard (3-0).

    Women's soccer

    • Marfay Jackson and Anna Manser scored for Mary Washington in a 2-0 win over Coast Guard. Holly Moore had three saves for Coast Guard (2-1).

    College field hockey

    • Bryn McGillivray scored the game-winner with 21:18 remaining to lift Connecticut College past Babson, 2-1. Meghan Lembo scored and Ryley van der Velde had five saves for Conn (1-1). Maggie Rakovic and Cheyanne Asplundh each added an assist.

    Women's volleyball

    • Amanda Garcia and freshman Myia Williams each had nine kills as Mitchell downed Pine Manor 25-18, 28-26, 26-24. Nicole Caminiti had 28 assists for Mitchell (2-1) and Gloria Charles and Old Lyme's Kaisea Caramante each had 12 digs.

    In the Mariners' other match, Garcia had five of her 15 kills in the fifth game and Caminiti chipped in 35 assists as Mitchell outlasted Purchase 25-15, 21-25, 25-23, 24-26, 17-15. Caramante had 21 digs and nine aces for the Mariners and freshman Janelle Rice had 19 digs, six kills and six aces.

    • Alex McDevitt had 13 kills, four blocks and three digs, but Conn College began its season with losses to Wheaton (25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22) and Keene State (28-26, 25-11, 25-19). Freshman Sam Hunter had 15 kills and two blocks for Conn and Caroline Martin added 10 kills and 16 digs.

    • Coast Guard split a pair of matches at the Brandeis Invitational as the Bears beat Wesleyan 3-1 before falling to Williams 3-0. Freshman Summer Adams was named to the all-tournament team for the Bears (5-2). Against Wesleyan, Ashley Dumont had 10 kills, Adams had seven kills, five aces and seven digs, Maggie Hine had 26 assists and Michelle McGill had 20 assists. Susan West had 11 kills and McGill had 11 digs in the loss.

    Women's tennis

    • Mitchell opened its season with an 8-1 loss to St. Joseph. Samantha Ryan of Quaker Hill won at No. 2 singles for Mitchell.

    Men's cross country

    • Freshman Connor Trapp placed seventh (17:32) as Conn College tied Westfield State for first place at the Trinity Invitational. Alejandro Hernandez finished eighth (17:43) and Jordan Comeau took ninth (17:47) for Conn, which had 58 points.

    • Zachary Velasquez finished third (28:11.50) to help Coast Guard place second at the Smith College Invitational. Nick Foster took fourth (28:20.60) and freshman Andrew Brown placed sixth (28:35) for the Bears.

    Women's cross country

    • Alex Fromme took fourth (19:52) as Conn College finished second at the Smith College . Ashley Curran placed 10th (20:14) and Emily Winter was 13th (20:26) for Conn, which scored 84 points.

    • Gretchen Krause finished 16th (20:39) as Coast Guard finished sixth at the Smith Invite. Chloe Benoit was 24th (21:10) and Beth Gollin was 28th (21:22) for the Bears.

    Boys' soccer

    • Brian Smail and Jason Zoldy each had a goal and an assist as Chase Collegiate downed Williams, 3-0, in the Blues' season opener. Case Van der Velde had eight saves for Williams.

    Waterford Speedbowl

    • Saturday's program at the Waterford Speedbowl was canceled due to the threat of rain. NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing returns next Saturday.

    Today the Speedbowl has its Motor Jam 2014 featuring the area's largest custom car show plus on-track activities which include spectator drags, burn-out competition, vintage auto racing exhibition, motorcycle stunts, live music and more. The show runs begins at 11 a.m.
