    H.S. cross country roundup: New London boys open season with sweep

    Montville - New London High School took the top three places and opened the 2014 season by sweeping an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division boys' cross country meet Tuesday afternoon at Camp Oakdale.

    The Whalers defeated Montville 19-36 and Killingly 21-34 behind the 1-2-3 finish of Xavier Jones (18 minutes, 35 seconds over the 5K course), Juan Hernandez (19:01) and Andrew Souza (19:18).

    Keith Trotochaud, fifth, was the top finisher for Montville, which lost to Killingly 25-30.

    In other meets:

    • Caleb Harris finished fifth overall in Waterford's 15-50 win over Griswold. The Lancers lost to Windham 26-29. Dan Clark, Dylan Abate and Brian Roscover finished in the top 10 for Waterford (1-1).

    • Woodstock Academy swept East Lyme (20-41) and Fitch (22-30) in the ECC Large. Vann Moffett won the 3.1-mile race in 17:55 for East Lyme, which lost to Fitch 20-35. Cam Wilhelm was Fitch's top finisher, placing fourth in 18:58.

    • St. Bernard rode the 1-2-3 sweep of James Rose, Jonathan Cabral and John Burianek to defeat Lyman Memorial 18-43 and Tourtellotte 15-50 in the ECC Small Division. Rose finished the 5K course in 18:24 while Cabral finished in 18:56 and Burianek in 19:36.

    • Reigning ECC champion Connor Gralton broke his own course record to lead host Norwich Free Academy to an ECC Large win over Bacon Academy (17-45) and a nonleague win over Wheeler (15-50). Bacon also beat Wheeler (19-40). Gralton finished in 16:59, breaking his record of 17:13 set a year ago. Brandon Mehlinger finished second, Tyler Sholes fourth and William Strong fifth for the Wildcats while Max Reck was ninth for Wheeler.

    • Bryce Hedman, Aaron Norcia and Christian Kuss finished 1-2-3 as Ledyard defeated Stonington 19-42 and Plainfield 17-46. Hedman and Norcia finished in 16:22 while Kuss was a second back. Kieran Thornell finished fifth for Stonington, which beat Plainfield 22-39 in the ECC Medium.

    • Grasso Tech lost its Constitution State Conference East Division opener at Parish Hill 25-32. Kariath Wiggins led the Eagles by placing third (21:20) while teammate Cole Rhein finished fifth (22.42).

    Girls

    • NFA senior Henley Smith finished first in 21:52, followed by teammates Aly Fields and Margaret Lewerk, as the Wildcats swept Bacon Academy (17-45) and Wheeler (16-47). Bacon also topped Wheeler 26-31. Wheeler's top finisher was Kelsey Melinosky in sixth.

    • Jeannette Mooney finished second and Waterford defeated Windham 15-50. The Lancers lost to Griswold 19-44. Jennifer Kohl finished 10th for Waterford (1-1).

    • Suzie Fitzgerald finished second in 23:32 to lead Montville past Killingly 24-32 and New London 25-30 in the ECC Medium Division. Deanna McCarvell was third in 23:51 for the Whalers (1-1, 1-1), who beat Killingly, 24-31. Karishma Chauhm (24:43) took fourth for Montville (2-0, 2-0).

    • Sylvia Lawrence won in 16:13 as Woodstock beat Fitch 21-38 and East Lyme 25-32 in the ECC Large. Kirsten Thompson was second in 16:32 for East Lyme (1-1, 1-1), which beat Fitch 26-29. Alicia Moroyoqui placed fourth in 17:03 for Fitch (0-2, 0-2).

    • Ellen Arvidson was the individual winner in 21:26 as St. Bernard swept Lyman Memorial (21-39) and Tourtellotte (15-50) in the ECC Small Division. Christina McCaffrey (third), Anna McKinley (fourth), Kaelin Smith (sixth) and Kat McKinley (seventh) also placed in the top 10 for the Saints.

    • Ledyard's Meghan Brawner was the individual winner, but Stonington edged the Colonels 27-28 to sweep a meet at Plainfield. Both teams beat Plainfield 15-50. Brawner finished in 19:57 while Elise Huysman, Liz Gray and Antonia Reynolds placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead Stonington.

    • Parish Hill swept the top five spots and defeated Grasso Tech 14-40 in the CSC East. Brook Flynn placed sixth for Grasso Tech and Avianna Matula was seventh.
