    Local roundup: Conn field hockey tops Smith in overtime

    Northampton, Mass. — Katlyn Paiva scored on a breakaway just 2 minutes, 57 seconds into overtime to give the Connecticut College field hockey team a 3-2 victory Tuesday over Smith.

    The Camels (2-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first half on unassisted goals by Cheyanne Asplundh and Carly Ozarowski, but Smith scored twice in the second half to push the game into overtime.

    Goalie Ryley van der Velde made three saves for the Camels, who held a 24-11 edge in shots in the non-conference game.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Molly Crowley and Meagan Dreher scored two goals each and Stonington opened the season with a 5-0 victory over Waterford in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. It was Stonington's first game since winning the Class S state championship last fall.

    "We were definitely very nervous. There was definitely a lot of anticipation for this game," Stonington coach Jenna Tucchio said. "I was nervous. The kids were nervous. It took awhile to settle in. I was still nervous even at 2-0. We weren't quite coming together yet."

    Leslie Spencer added a goal and Cameron Dreher, in her first season starting in goal, made two saves for the Bears.

    • Alyssa Rainey, Teagan Waggoner and Bernice Boateng scored for Killingly in its 3-2 win over East Lyme. Cara Bradley scored both goals for East Lyme and Alex Rose had 11 saves.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Jenn Paride 13 had aces, four kills and two blocks as Wheeler topped Putnam 25-18, 25-20, 25-27 and 25-11. Lexi Galluci had 17 assists and five aces for Wheeler, Alysia Rathbun 10 aces, Christy Sehl seven blocks and two kills and Chrissy McSwain seven kills and three aces.

    • Sophie Sweden had 29 assists and Monique Fletcher 10 kills as Norwich Free Academy swept Griswold 25-13, 25-16, 25-9.

    • Madison Bodley had six service points to lead Norwich Tech in its 25-7, 25-14, 25-9 loss to Killingly.

    • Kasey Testa had eight digs and a kill for Old Lyme in a 25-10, 25-7, 25-13 loss to defending CIAC Class S champion Morgan in the Shoreline Conference.
