Rear Adm. Stosz to continue with Coast Guard

In this Feb. 17, 2012, Day file photo, Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz, Superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy, shares a laugh during a meeting with Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom.

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz, superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, has been selected for continuation as a rear admiral in the Coast Guard.

Stosz became the first woman ever to lead a U.S. military academy when she began her tour at the academy in New London in 2011. Her tour ends in summer of 2015, according to Coast Guard Academy spokesman David Santos.

Stosz’s continuation is a break from Coast Guard tradition. Superintendents of the academy typically retire after completing their time in the post.

“Normally, this is the capper of your career,” Santos said Thursday.
