Norwich man arrested for Facebook hoax involving 'decayed corpse'

    Christopher Mayo

Norwich — Police on Thursday arrested a Norwich man who they say alarmed area residents after he posted a picture of himself on Facebook with a “decayed corpse.”

Christopher Mayo, 34, was charged with second-degree breach of peace.

Police said at about 7:30 p.m. they received numerous calls from “alarmed” citizens who wished to report a suspicious Facebook post. The people told police that Mayo took pictures of himself with the dead body, which he reported was in the woods on Lake Street.

Police said they immediately began an investigation. Police searched the wooded area of Lake Street by the basketball courts, where Mayo in Facebook conversations said the body was located.

Police found Mayo a short distance away and determined that it was a hoax. He was subsequently arrested.

Mayo posted a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Sept. 25.

Police want to remind residents to report any suspicious activity by calling them at (860) 886-5561.
