Ignorance is bliss, so we always wear a stupid grin

    Howdy,

Preseason pigskin prognostications are about as predictable as Lady Gaga, sans the meat dress and giant egg.

There were a few things, however, that fans, coaches and the media seemed to agree on prior to this already gorgeous football season:

    • Defending Class LL champ Southington was hands-down the best team in the state.

    • Hand would be really good based on its numerous returning talent.

    • Fairfield Prep would roll teams based on all it had back

    • Darien was the FCIAC favorite (an opinion shared by that league’s coaches).

    • Greenwich was the other top FCIAC contender.

    • New Canaan would take a step back after graduating all but several starters (even head coach Lou Marinelli rated others ahead of his inexperienced team.)

    • West Haven wouldn’t be as formidable as last season as it, too, graduating so many and would be starting many youngsters.

Here’s what we now know — WE KNOW NOTHING.

    To wit:

Southington 41, Glastonbury 38. The Blue Knights trailed the latter after the first quarter, 10-0.

    New Canaan 21, Hand 14.

Fairfield Prep 59, Stamford 40. The Black Knights kept pace with Prep for most of the game.

Darien 47, Hillhouse 25. Don’t let the score fool you — The House led 18-14 at halftime.

    West Haven 35, Greenwich 22.

Not sure the last time Week 1 was this outrageous.

Seriously, Week 1 has been more squirrelly than a squirrel squirrel-ing.

    (SQUIRREL!)

Man, if Week 1 is a sign of things to come, then this will be this season is going to be the greatest and sexiest season in a decade.

    Or maybe it won’t.

Here’s how the Top 10 have fared this weekend. We’ll have to use the New Haven Register media poll this week as TEAM DAY~! avoids the perils of preseason rankings with its coaches poll.

(Said Day Top 10 state coaches poll will be unleashed upon all of you Monday evening, Buddha willing.)

And it goes a little something like this:

No. 9 New Canaan 21, No. 2 Hand 14. Scott Ericson of Hearst Inc., and Pooch Diggity Dog of the GameTimeCT.com monolith reporting.

No. 3 Fairfield Prep beat Stamford at Arena Football. Scott Ericson of Hearst Inc. reporting.

No. 4 Darien beat Hillhouse, 47-25. Andrew Callahan of Hearst Inc. reporting.
