    H.S. roundup: Stonington, Valley/OL open with football wins

    Woodstock - Amadi White threw five touchdown passes in his first varsity start and Stonington High School scored touchdowns on its first six possessions Saturday en route to a 48-7 season-opening football victory over Woodstock Academy.

    White, who also ran for a sixth score, completed 7 of 9 passes for 166 yards. He threw two touchdown passes apiece to Tyler Burnside (42 and 32 yards) and Matt Mitchell (8 and 22 yards) and one to Justin Laing (25 yards). Mitchell also ran eight yards for his third touchdown of the day.

    Jack Riordan led the Bears with 114 rushing yards on eight carries while Mitchell finished with 78 yards on five attempts.

    "Amadi had a great day, especially for his first varsity start," Stonington coach A.J. Massengale said. "We're pretty young and we're still trying to figure out who we are and what kind of offensive identity we're going to have, but a lot of kids carried the ball and a lot got involved in what we want to do, so we'll see what happens."

    In other games:

    • Justin Cheverier accounted for 208 yards, including a 31-year touchdown run, as Valley Regional/Old Lyme began defense of its Pequot Football Conference Sassacus Division title with a 38-0 victory over Nonnewaug. Cheverier had nine carries for 128 yards and two receptions for 80 yards.

    Quarterback Chris Jean-Pierre, a converted wide receiver, had touchdown runs of 10 and 12 yards for the Warriors, who led 24-0 at halftime, while Evan Smith also had a fine all-around game, rushing 54 yards for a touchdown, catching a 50-yard TD pass from reserve QB Matt Sepere, and intercepting a pass on defense. Valley/Old Lyme's defense held Nonnewaug to 50 total yards and only five first downs.

    Boys' soccer

    • Tyler Lewis scored just five minutes into the game and Bacon Academy made the goal stand up in a 1-0 win over Stonington. Goalie Joey Rosa made 14 saves for the Bears (1-1), who were outshot 15-7, while Bacon goalie Austin Rhodes had seven saves.

    Girls' soccer

    • Fitch rallied for two goals in the second half to defeat Killingly 2-1. Ally Clarke and Jenna Bendfeldt scored for the Falcons (1-2) and goalie Shea Berry made 17 saves.

    • Four different players scored goals as Old Lyme defeated Old Saybrook 4-0 in the Shoreline Conference. Meredith Aird, Jenna Peduzzi, Hannah O'Brien and Keelin Hurtt each had a goal for the Wildcats (2-0) while Maddie Ouellette had a pair of assists.

    Field hockey

    • Shelby Larubina, assisted by Evie Cook, scored in overtime to give Fitch/Ledyard a 2-1 win over Williams School. Cook scored the first goal for the Falcons while Allie Norman scored for the Blues, who were outshot 16-7.

    Volleyball

    • Defending Class S champion Morgan defeated East Lyme 25-11, 25-19, 25-12 despite 19 digs by Brielle Benson. The Vikings (0-3) also lost on Friday night to Farmington 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 as Benson had 25 digs.

    • Old Lyme defeated New London 25-8, 25-11, 25-16 as Colleen Mueller had eight digs, three kills and 26 service points and Holly Fiscus added 10 assists.

    • Mae Sefransky had 25 assists to help lead unbeaten Fitch to a 25-10, 25-12, 25-18 win over Bristol Central. Jen Severino added 14 service points and eight kills for the Falcons (3-0) while Caroline Taber finished with 12 service points and six kills.

    • Norwich Free Academy improved to 3-0 with a 25-17, 25-12, 25-15 road win at Pomperaug. Abby Mattern had 13 kills for the Wildcats while Mackenzie Burke added 20 digs, Sophie Swedin 20 assists and 13 service points and Monique Fletcher nine kills.

    • Waterford (1-1) won its first match of the season, a 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 victory over Windham.

    Boys' cross country

    • Ledyard's Bryce Hedman finished 16th overall in 16 minutes, 40 seconds in the Varsity 1 race at the 36th Bob Haddad Windham Invitational. Teammate Aaron Norcia also had a top-25 finish, placing 22nd in 16:57 for the Colonels, who finished seventh as a team. In the Varsity 2 race, East Lyme's Vann Moffett was the top local finisher in eighth place (17:25) while Stonington's Kieran Thornell (15th, 17:25), New London's Xavier Jones (20th, 17:57) and Stonington's Andrew Bourque (25th, 18:18) also finished in the top 25. Stonington finished ninth in the team race (228 points) with East Lyme 11th (270) and New London 12th (283). In the Varsity 3 race, St. Bernard's James Rose placed 16th (17:38) and teammate Jonathan Cabral 22nd (17:48) as the Saints finished eighth with 212 points. Also, Justin Shafner of Williams School finished 10th in 17:17.

    Girls' cross country

    • St. Bernard's Ellen Arvidson had the top local finish, placing fourth (20:16) in the Varsity 3 race at the 36th Bob Haddad Windham Invitational. Wheeler's Kelsey Melinosky (23rd, 21:54) also placed in the top 25 while St. Bernard (246 points) finished 10th as a team and Wheeler (258) wound up 11th. In the Varsity 1 race, Waterford's Jeannette Mooney was 11th (20:28) and Ledyard's Megan Brawner finished 13th (20:32) while NFA was the top team finished in 13th place (345 points). In the Varsity 2 race, Stonington finished ninth with 208 points and was led by Elise Huysman, who placed 33rd in 22:17.
