Derelict vessel towed to new location in Mystic

A derelict boat that has been the topic of controversy in Mystic has been towed to a spot off Holmes Street, where it rests partially submerged.

Mystic - A 45-foot, illegally anchored boat that ran aground behind the Ocean Community YMCA last weekend, has now been towed behind the Schooner Wharf building on Holmes Street where it sits partially submerged on the shoreline.

Harbormaster Paul Watts said Sunday that while the boat is secure and likely does not pose a threat to nearby boats and docks, it is still a derelict vessel and eventually needs to be removed by owner Jim Murphy.

Watts and the Mystic River Harbor Management Commission have been working with police, state officials and the Coast Guard over the past six weeks to come up with a way to force Murphy remove the boat. Some residents have criticized the commission, saying it should fine Murphy, remove the boat and bill him. The boat had been illegally anchored in the Mystic River before an unusually high tide forced it ashore. Murphy has said he has been trying to obtain a legal mooring.
