    Local roundup: Coast Guard's Black honored by NEFC

    Aaron Black of Coast Guard was honored as the New England Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Sunday.

    Black, a senior lineman, had a game-high 14 tackles in the Bears' 42-31 win over Merchant Marine. That included nine solo tackles and one for a loss as Coast Guard allowed just three points in the second half.

    Men's soccer

    • UConn scored three times in the first half and held on to beat Seattle 3-1. Ethan Vanacore-Decker, Jakob Nerwinski and Adria Beso Marco scored for the Huskies (2-3).

    • Hunter Torrey scored in the 86th minute and Lyndon State held on to beat Mitchell College 1-0. Ramazan Sinani made four saves for Mitchell (3-2).

    Women's soccer

    • Danielle Gottwik and Riley Houle scored two goals each as UConn beat Massachusetts 5-0 in a nonleague game. Rachel Hill had a goal and an assist for the Huskies (6-1-1).

    • Sarah Cornell scored off a header in the 69th minute and Lyndon State held on to beat Mitchell College 1-0. Katie McBride made 10 saves for Mitchell (0-3), which was outshot 20-10.

    Field hockey

    • No. 2 UConn lost to No. 15 Boston College, 3-2 in as shootout. Emma Plasteras' goal in the second shootout period clinched the win for the Eagles (5-1). Chrissy Davidson and Sophie Bowden had a goal and an assist each for UConn (4-1).

    Men's water polo

    • Connecticut College opened its season with a pair of losses in the Bruno Classic at Brown University. Conn lost to Harvard 17-11 and Brown 16-8. Senior All-American Robert Spencer had six goals, Carlos Heros scored four times and freshman Dylan Pinckert had two goals for Conn.

    College sailing

    • Connecticut College finished fifth, opening its season at the Penobscot Bay Open Regatta in Maine. Cooper Nefsky, Walter Florio and Tori Allen were ninth in the A division and Hugh MacGillivray and Isabelle Pieper were third in the B division.

    Conn was also eighth at the Toni Deutsch Regatta in Boston and 14th in the Harry Anderson Trophy Regatta in Branford. In Boston, Liz Dubovik and Alix Israel were sixth in the A division and Alex Romagnolli, Rebecca Quirke and Serena Cipullo were 11th in the B division. In Branford, Bryce Kopp, Ben Meyers and Kim Bolick were ninth in the A division and Jordan Bothwick, Matthew Lau-Hansen and Lea Bushnell were 14th in the B division.

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Montville played to a 1-1 tie with Weston on Saturday. Montville's Nicole Dutka scored in the second half to tie the game. Hannah Meyers had an assist and Stefanie Szot made 10 saves for Montville (0-1-1).

    H.S. football

    • Senior Jacob Epps scored the final touchdown for New London during its 43-7 win over Griswold on Friday night. He was misidentified in a story that ran in Saturday's edition.
