    The Day's Top 10 H.S. football coaches' poll / Week 1

First-place votes in parentheses, record, points tabulated on a 30-28- 26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-11-10-9-8-7 basis, and last season's final ranking:

    1. New Canaan (6) 1-0 362 2

KNOW THIS: New starting quarterback Mike Collins completed 22 of 42 passes for 265 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in last Friday's 21-14 win at Hand.

NEXT: vs. Bassick, Friday, 7 p.m.

    2. Southington (4) 1-0 356 T3

KNOW THIS: The defending Class LL champion outgained Glastonbury in last Friday's game, 428-129. The Blue Knights had to overcome a 10-point, first-half deficit to win, however, 41-38.

NEXT: at Manchester, Friday, 6:30 p.m.

    3. Ansonia (2) 1-0 334 1

KNOW THIS: The Chargers welcomed Oxford to the Naugatuck Valley League with a beating. They needed just 18 plays to gain 157 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of their 45-0 win.

NEXT: vs. Derby, Friday, 7 p.m.

    4. Fairfield Prep (1) 1-0 286 6

KNOW THIS: The Jesuits have one of the state's most dangerous runners (quarterback Colton Smith). They have an offensive line manned by Boston College-bound Anthony Palazollo (6-6, 318), Arthur Mansolillo (6-0, 278) and Connor Roche (6-3, 265). And they have last season's second-half collapse in the Class LL final to keep them hungry.

NEXT: at St. Joseph, Saturday, 1 p.m.

    5. Darien 1-0 271 5

KNOW THIS: FCIAC coaches deemed the Blue Wave the conference favorite because they returned eight defensive starters and have a brawny offensive front. They're more experienced than last season's Class L runner-up team, too.

NEXT: at Greenwich, Friday, 7 p.m.

    6. St. Joseph 1-0 231 T3

KNOW THIS: The return of running back Mufasha Abdul-Basir, receiver Lars Pedersen and 20 other seniors help the defending Class M champion reload after graduating 11 starters.

NEXT: vs. Fairfield Prep, Saturday, 1 p.m.

    7. West Haven 1-0 180 8

KNOW THIS: The Blue Devils were built to win a state title last season and head coach Ed McCarthy told GameTimeCT.com that this was probably his youngest team in his 32 seasons there. West Haven has always been dangerous as an underdog, which it was when it won 35-22 last Friday over Greenwich, which coaches and the media thought was among the FCIAC favorites.

NEXT: at Foran, Friday, 7 p.m.

    8. Middletown 1-0 171 9

KNOW THIS: The Blue Dragons graduated the majority of players from last season's Class L semifinalist. No matter: 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year Dario Highsmith (running back) and Isaiah Thompkins (linebacker) both return, and Middletown never, ever lacks talent.

NEXT: at Wethersfield, Friday, 7 p.m.

    9. Xavier 1-0 157 NR

KNOW THIS: The perennial state powerhouse returned just seven starters. The Falcons knew they had the makings of a good defense with the return of linemen Chidi Broderick (6-2, 240), Tanner Kern (6-4, 290) and Kevin Lawrence (6-3, 280). They held Staples to 97 yards in last Friday's last-second 3-0 win.

NEXT: vs. North Haven, Friday, 7 p.m.

    10. Newtown 1-0 132 NR

KNOW THIS: The two-time defending South-West Conference champ returned just about every starter with quarterback being among the few exceptions. Jacob Burden completed 13 of 17 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in last Friday's 47-18 rout of New Milford.

NEXT: at Bunnell, Friday, 7 p.m.

Dropped out: Glastonbury (7), Hall (10).
