    Local roundup: Coast Guard volleyball upsets Springfield in five games

    New London — Ashley Dumont finished with 18 kills and just one error as the Coast Guard Academy volleyball team stunned Springfield 3-2 Tuesday night in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener for both schools.

    Coast Guard coach Aylene Ilkson, who played and served as an assistant coach at Springfield, picked up her first win against her alma mater after losing to the Pride last season.

    Coast Guard beat Springfield, the No. 1 team in New England and the defending NEWMAC champion, 18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 17-25, 16-14. The Bears are 7-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

    Springfield (6-3, 0-1) had won nine of its last 10 matches against Coast Guard, with the only win coming in the 2010 NEWMAC tournament championship game. It was the Bears first regular season win over the Pride since 2006.

    Susan West added 10 kills for Coast Guard, while freshman Summer Adams finished with nine kills. Michaela McKeown led the Bears with 17 digs and freshman Michelle McGill finished with 15. Freshman Michelle Hernandez had a match-high 23 assists.

    Senior Molly Giannattasio of East Lyme led Springfield with 18 assists.

    In the fifth game, Springfield had match point leading 14-13 before Dumont had a kill to tie it 14-14. Adams had a kill to get the Bears to match point and a Dumont kill ended the match.

    In other matches:

    • Conn College rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Western New England 25-12, 22-25, 25-7, 28-26 and 15-6. Sam Hunter had 13 kills, four digs and one block for the Camels (2-5) while Ella Johnson had eight kills, seven blocks, two aces and two digs, Caroline Martin had eight kills, six aces and 14 digs, Emily Arterbury had 26 assists and five aces and Katia Elisman had 14 assists, three digs and five blocks. Kelsey Armstrong, who played at Fitch, had 24 digs and 11 kills for WNEC (8-4).

    H.S. swimming

    • Unbeaten East Lyme picked up individual wins from five different swimmers on the way to a 98-72 victory over rival Fitch/St. Bernard in an Eastern Connecticut Conference meet. It was the season opener for Fitch.

    Gretchen Stelter (50-yard freestyle, 26.79 seconds), Tori Poole (100 butterfly, 1:04.06), Emma Magna (100 free, 59.64), Carlie Biondi (500 free, 5:50.04) and Ugne Kirvelevicius (100 breaststroke, 1:10.59) won events for the Vikings (3-0, 1-0), while Poole, Kirvelevicius, Alexis Dumais and Michelle Saracovan teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in 2:03.17. Meredith Hird won the 200 individual medley (2:13.50) and 100 backstroke (1:05.28) for Fitch, while Grace Moriarty captured the 200 free (2:04.73) and both were part of two winning relay teams with Mikaela Dimaapi and Lauren Roper - the 200 free team (1:47.18) and the 400 free team (3:56.87).

    • Katherine Tsiouris won the diving competition (164.55 points) and qualified for the Class S state meet during Waterford's 80-64 win over Windham/Lyman Memorial in the ECC. Asia Langley won the 200-meter freestyle (2:20.15) and 400 free (4:51.14) for Waterford (2-0, 1-0) and teamed with Caitlin Henderson, Tori Zane and Meika Gathy to win the 200 medley relay (2:23.49). Gathy also won the 200 IM (2:47.02) and 100 backstroke (1:13.83), Zane won the 100 butterfly (1:28.64) and Cassie Medbery the 50 free (33.52).

    • Olivia Satti and Megan Pipech won two events apiece as Ledyard opened its season with a 95-75 win over Norwich Free Academy in the ECC. It was also the first meet in the Colonels' new home, the Mashantucket Community Center Pool. Satti won the 200 free (2:30.37) and 500 free (7:09.33) while Pipech captured the 100 free (1:05.34) and 100 breast (1:29.62). Emma Buckridge won the 200 IM (2:24.18) and 100 fly (1:08.34) for the Wildcats (0-2, 0-1).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Kailey MarcAurele had two goals and two assists while Cara Bradley had two goals and one assist to help lead East Lyme over Windham 8-0 in the ECC. Sara Shukis also scored twice for the Vikings (1-2, 1-1) while Hannah LeBeau and Amelia Selmeski each added one goal.

    • Molly Crowley finished with three goals and an assist in Stonington's 7-0 victory over NFA in the ECC. Casey Williams added a goal and an assist, Meagan Dreher, Margot Calmar and Haley Duba added goals and Cameron Dreher made three saves for the Bears (2-0, 2-0). NFA is 1-1, 1-1.

    College field hockey

    • Freshman Kaitlyn Paiva scored three goals as Connecticut College routed Springfield 5-1. Bryn MacGillivray and Amanda Jacobsen also scored goals for the Camels (3-2).

    College women's soccer

    • Conn College scored four goals in the first 20 minutes and cruised to an 8-0 win over Saint Joseph. Rebecca Raymond had two goals and an assist for the Camels (4-0) while Morgan Cowie-Haskell scored twice and Alex Tribelli, Michelle Medina, Nicole Medina and Livi Block each scored one goal.
