Analysis: This is the toughest matchup of the season for Coast Guard, as Hampden-Sydney is ranked 25th in the nation in the D3football.com poll and has preseason All-Americans at quarterback and wide receiver. Nance, the quarterback, is a transfer from Tennessee who threw for 3,504 yards and 27 touchdowns last season to lead the Tigers to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Walker, meanwhile, broke five school records last year, leading the nation with 1,723 receiving yards. Coast Guard, meanwhile, will have to rely on momentum, beating rival Merchant Marine 42-31 after trailing by 14 in the first half. The Bears' defense gave up just three points in the second half last week, while the offense kicked in, with Victory throwing three second-half touchdowns, one to Brown and two to Groff. This week has included head coach Bill George fulfilling a promise to his players to go for a swim in the Thames River should they beat the Mariners. Also, Coast Guard practiced Friday at the Washington Redskins preseason facility in Richmond, Va., so they enter today's game enthusiastically. … Coast Guard's Brown, also a preseason All-American, is 13 receptions shy of the program's all-time record of 159, set by Sam England from 2006-09. … Hampden-Sydney topped Coast Guard 49-7 last season, with Macko rushing for three touchdowns and catching another from Nash. Victory made his collegiate debut in that game for Coast Guard, coming off the bench to go 8-for-13 for 50 yards. … This is Coast Guard's final nonleague game before opening New England Football Conference play next week against Nichols.
