Groton home health aide charged after allegedly stealing $95,000 in jewelry from Mystic woman

Stonington — Police have charged a Groton home health aide with prior drug and larceny convictions with stealing $95,000 in jewelry from a Mystic woman she was hired to care for.

Monday’s arrest of Diana Gladue, 51, of 1505 North Road for first-degree larceny is the second time in three months that police have arrested a caregiver here for stealing large amounts of cash or jewelry from a person they were caring for.

In July, police charged Yadira Farias of New London with stealing jewelry and making fraudulent credit card purchases of more than $100,000 from a couple she cared for at the Stone Ridge retirement community in Mystic. That case is pending in New London Superior Court.

According to the warrant for Gladue’s arrest, a Mistuxet Avenue woman called police on June 15 to report that when she went looking for her jewelry in her mother’s bedroom, she found a large amount of it was missing. The last time she had seen the jewelry was in October 2012.

The value of the rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and pendants with diamonds, emeralds, rubies, pearls, opals and gold was more than $95,000.

She said her mother, who lives with her, is disabled and requires care from a number of services.

Veteran Detective Cody Floyd, who also investigated the Farias case, then contacted state-run Connecticut Community Care Inc. which provided the service order for Recovery Resources LLC of Norwich to provide health care for the woman.

Floyd asked for a list of caregivers who had cared for the woman since October 2012.

On that list was Gladue, who had worked with the woman from January 2012 until the present.

Floyd found that Gladue had a 2002 conviction for sixth-degree larceny, a second 2002 conviction for sale of narcotics, possession of narcotics and violation of probation and a 2004 conviction for possession of narcotics.

His investigation also revealed that Gladue lived in Groton with John Glynn, who has a 2005 conviction for possession of narcotics.

Floyd then searched a pawn shop database and found that between November 2012 and April 2014, Gladue and Glynn sold 40 pieces of jewelry at Gold Star Pawn in Groton. The shop provided police with photographs of the jewelry it purchased from the pair along with their photos, which Floyd identified as Gladue and Glynn based on their mug shots from previous arrests.

The woman who made the report identified 29 pieces of jewelry as those that had been stolen.

On July 8, Stonington and Groton police executed a search warrant at Gladue and Glynn’s home. Gladue was not home, but Glynn told police that Gladue told him she had been selling the jewelry for her mother and aunt. Police also seized a pair of earrings from the home and a bookmark, which the Mystic woman identified as among the missing items.

According to the warrant, police called Gladue on her cellphone and asked her to come to the house. She said she would but did not show up. Police set up another interview with Gladue at the police station, but she did not appear then, either. Further attempts to contact her were unsuccessful.

Police also talked to several local jewelers, who estimated the value of the stolen items and identified having sold some of them to the woman who reported the items missing.

Gladue was arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court, where a judge set her bond at $95,000. She is scheduled to appear again in court on Oct. 14.
