Sun finish strong to beat Stars 72-68 for first win

San Antonio — The Connecticut Sun had just enough mettle to win their first game of the WNBA season Thursday.

Alyssa Thomas had 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals as Connecticut beat the San Antonio Stars, 72-68, for its first win under first-year head coach Curt Miller.

“Some stars on both teams struggled to find baskets, but I loved our fight,” Miller said. “We didn’t necessarily have that fight when we had adversity in the first game (Saturday’s 90-73 loss to the Chicago Sky), so I liked the way that we finished.”

Sun center Kelsey Bone said, “We wanted to come in and execute better than we did in our first game and sneak a road win in. In this league, road wins are so important. We slowed it down, took our time with a lot more of our offenses, and we were little bit more successful.”

Bone had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Connecticut (1-1) and Jasmine Thomas scored 12 with eight assists and three steals. Camille Little added 13 points and six rebounds in her first game with the team after missing Saturday’s game due to her Italian league season running long.

“It’s nice to have Camille back to give us a veteran presence since we’re so young,” Miller said. “I think you saw two of the youngest teams in the league have some struggles, and, at times, saw lot of promising youth on the court for the future for both teams.”

Dearica Hamby had 16 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio (0-2) and rookie Moriah Jefferson of UConn added 10 points and seven assists.

Connecticut went ahead for good with five minutes left in the game. Jasmine Thomas made a driving bank shot, followed by Little’s layup. Alyssa Thomas added a 16-foot jumper to give the Sun a 65-59 lead with 4:23 remaining.

Jefferson’s layup cut San Antonio’s lead to one with 3:29 left, but Little and Bentley answered with successive jumpers.

The Sun return to Connecticut for their opener at 7 p.m. Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
