Dinotopia: Art, Science, and Imagination
Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT
the original artwork of James Gurney, the author and illustrator of Dinotopia, an illustrated book series that tells the story of an island where humans and sentient dinosaurs live together in harmony.
On view through February 2, the exhibition brings together paintings from Gurney’s well-loved books A Land Apart From Time, The World Beneath, Journey to Chandara, and First Flight, along with sketches and maquettes from Gurney’s studio. Dinosaur specimens from the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, including a Deinonychus skull and a Tyrannosaurus tooth, will complement the paintings and illuminate the science behind Gurney’s art. The Old Lyme Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library will host Lullaby Nights with Eleanor Robinson on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:15 PM in the Community Room. This free program will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013; Tuesday, February 5, 2013; and Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Miss Eleanor will sing lullabies and play stringed instruments for children ages birth to five and their families. She will provide percussive instruments for the families gathered. Eleanor Robinson has taught music and movement classes for over a decade in libraries, nursery schools, community centers, and churches. She has performed in classic rock and bluegrass bands. She is the owner of Sweet Beats.

19th Annual Holiday Train Show

The family-friendly Holiday Train Show exhibit is back at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex for its nineteenth year of fun for all ages. Train artist Steve Cryan has worked his magic again with more trains, new scenery, and lots of surprises to be found in the fully operational 26-foot model train layout. Visitors are challenged to find a scavenger list of various objects hidden within the settings while the very young can get hands-on at the expanded American Flyer and Lionel train layout designed for toddler size viewing. The exhibit is a true locomotive extravaganza and a perfect outing for train fans and all who are young at heart. Sponsored by Liberty Bank, The Safety Zone and Valley Courier, the exhibit runs through February 10, 2013.

EagleWatch and Winter Wildlife Boat Cruises

Get an up-close view of wintering Bald Eagles and other winter wildlife on the Connecticut River aboard Project Oceanology’s 65-foot Enviro-lab III with heated cabin and plenty of free coffee. Expeditions depart on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for a 1.5 hour tour with CRM educators and naturalist. Learn why this once endangered species is back and thriving in the lower Connecticut River Valley and take in the Eagles of Essex exhibit once back at the Museum. All plus use of binoculars is included in each boat tour ticket.
