Rapper Cardi B hits up Foxwoods this weekend

Anyone who can dislodge Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” from the top of the U.S. Billboard charts might as well go down as a hero in my book (sorry, Taylor). The rapper who is credited with this feat is Cardi B — a 25-year-old Instagram-star/former reality TV star/former stripper turned rapper. She hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her trap super-hit “Bodak Yellow” in September — the first female rapper to do so in 19 years.

Cardi B’s persona is humorous and over-the-top, as can be witnessed throughout her Instagram videos, which are at once peculiar and refreshing. As a second-generation Dominican/Trinidadian who was born and raised in the Bronx, she exudes an unapologetic and impulsive girl-power attitude — something that I can appreciate because, from her, it feels genuine.

For those unfamiliar with her music, check out her video “Bodak Yellow” on YouTube. While watching, you might not be floored by the song’s lyrics (which aren’t terribly deep or socially conscious), but according to the rapper, there’s a reason behind that. In an interview with Rolling Stone in October, she explains with blunt honesty, "It's so sad to say, and I don't want to be the one to say it, but you gotta follow the trend.”

“This generation loves to get high,” she continues. “They love to be on drugs. This is why they on that (stuff): They don't want to think about what you're saying."

See her perform Friday at Foxwoods alongside YFN Lucci, Dave East and Young MA.

Cardi B, YFN Lucci, Dave East, & Young MA, 8 p.m., Friday, Foxwoods’ Grand Theater; $75-$95; 1-800-200-2882.
