    H.S. football / Week 9 preview capsules

    Friday's Games

Bacon Academy at Ledyard, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Bacon (3-4); Ledyard (2-5)

Last week: Bacon lost to Griswold 8-7; Ledyard lost to Montville 21-7

Outlook: Bacon Academy, with its 99 points scored in seven games, has among the most unproductive offenses in the ECC this season. The Bobcats face the Ledyard defense that has surrendered the most points among ECC schools this season (222). Can the Ledyard defense break from its pattern and play well enough to help the Colonels win their third game? Bacon, meanwhile, can still earn a share of the ECC Div. II title in the coming weeks.

New London at Montville, 6:30 p.m.

Records: New London (1-6); Montville (3-4)

Last week: New London lost to Fitch 33-20; Montville defeated Ledyard 21-7

Outlook: Fun fact about Montville football: The program is undefeated in the lifetime of Adley Elizabeth Grove. That's because she's the newborn daughter to Montville coach Tanner Grove and his wife, Erika. On the same day Adley was born last Friday, the Indians rewarded their coach by snapping a four-game losing streak. Will Adley move her record to 2-0 here? The Whalers have lost six straight.

    Stonington at Griswold, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Stonington (2-4); Griswold (5-2)

Last week: Stonington defeated Waterford 27-8; Griswold defeated Bacon 8-7

Outlook: This was once the game that, for several seasons, would decide the old ECC Small Division. Griswold and Stonington don't share divisions anymore, but still have plenty left to play for. The Bears want to ride the wave of last week's 27-point second half while Griswold can clinch a winning season with a victory here. Stonington is the lone unbeaten team left in ECC Div. II.

    Waterford at NFA, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Waterford (0-6); NFA (4-3)

Last week: NFA defeated East Lyme 27-21; Waterford lost to Stonington 27-8

Outlook: NFA snapped a losing streak last week at East Lyme and sits a game back of Fitch in ECC Div. I. The Wildcats are battling some injuries, however. Waterford, meanwhile, couldn't sustain a lead at halftime last week against Stonington. The Lancers have allowed 209 points, third most in the ECC.

Thames River at Platt Tech, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Thames River 3-3; Platt Tech 2-5

Last week: Thames River was idle; Platt Tech lost to ATI, 50-6

Outlook: Thames River had a bye week to enjoy its narrow victory at Vinal/East Hampton/Goodwin Tech two weeks ago. The Crusaders have won two straight. A win here would get them closer to a winning season.

    Rockville at Valley/Old Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Rockville (0-7); Valley (6-1)

Last week: Rockville lost to Granby 28-22; Valley defeated Cromwell/Portland 34-28 (OT)

Outlook: The biggest win of the season last week vaulted the Warriors into a first-place tie with Cromwell/Portland in the Pequot Sassacus and into the final playoff spot in Class S. Valley/Old Lyme will do no worse than share the title and would make the playoffs if they win their remaining games. Last week marked Rockville's first single-digit loss of the season.
