CIAC playoffs: Fitch to host Masuk while Valley/OL will visit Rocky Hill

It turned into a strange Thanksgiving Day evening for Fitch football coach Mike Ellis.

Only hours after learning his unbeaten Falcons would be the third seed and host No. 6 Maloney in the quarterfinals of the Class L playoffs on Tuesday night, he learned Fitch was actually the No. 4 seed and would welcome No. 5 Masuk to Dorr Field instead.

The CIAC, which will officially certify its state playoff pairings on Friday, discovered Thursday's Bristol Central-Bristol Eastern game was reported incorrectly and that Bristol Central had won the game.

That meant Windsor, which thought it was set as the four seed, received an extra 10-point bonus allowing it to bump the Falcons from the No. 3 spot (the two finished tied with a 135.00 average, but Windsor held the tiebreaker).

Windsor will now host Maloney (Windsor beat the Spartans 28-0 in Week 1).

“So I guess the film trade with Maloney is out the window now,” Ellis said while breaking into laughter Thursday night. “At least we didn’t start with the Maloney preparation.”

While Fitch's Class L playoff fate was finally determined Thursday, so was Valley Regional/Old Lyme's opponent in the Class S playoffs. The Warriors (9-1) who had clinched a spot last Friday with a victory over Haddam-Killingworth, finished as the sixth-seed and will visit No. 3 Rocky Hill (10-0) on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals.

Fitch will be joined in the playoffs by one other team from the Eastern Connecticut Conference, Division III champion Killingly. The Redmen (10-0) are seeded first in Class M and will host No. 9 Law of Milford (6-4) in the quarterfinals.

Following is the unofficial quarterfinal pairings:

Class LL — No. 8 Fairfield Prep at No. 1 Greenwich, No. 7 West Haven at No. 2 Shelton, No. 6 East Hartford at No. 3 Darien, No. 5 Naugatuck at No. 4 South Windsor.
